Sumario:I review the main theoretical motivations for the construction of new facilities for HEP operating at very high intensity. The common theme in this research is the exploration of the flavour structure of the quark and lepton sectors: I will justify the need for a continued study of these phenomena at a time when the other frontier, the high- energy one, will be driving with the LHC the direct search for new phenomena.
