The longitudinal particle distribution was changed in the PS by using the third 80 MHz RF cavity during bunch rotation, resulting in shorter bunches for the same longitudinal emittance. No reduction in losses was observed in the SPS for such "short" bunches. At the same time, more intense beams show significantly increased losses.
