Sumario: | Insertion quadrupoles with large aperture and high gradient are required to achieve the luminosity upgrade goal of 1035 cm-2s-1 at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Nb$_{3}$Sn conductor is required in order to operate at high field and with sufficient temperature margin. We report here on the development of a “High-performance Quadrupole” (HQ) that will demonstrate the technology required for achieving the target luminosity. Conductor requirements, magnetic, mechanical and quench protection issues are presented and discussed. The HQ design is also suitable for an intermediate “Phase 1” upgrade, operating with large engineering margin. |
