description More than 2200 scientists coming from 37 countries participate in the ATLAS experiment. Only 17% of these are women. Why is this so? In Turkey, like elsewhere in the Balkans, there is a higher proportion of women physicists than in other European and North American countries. I will address this difference as well as examine the role of women in the ATLAS collaboration. I will also talk about the activities of the ATLAS Women's Network, of which Prof. Engin Arik was a founding member. Since Prof. Arik also worked hard to bring talented young Turkish students to CERN, I will also talk about the Engin Arik Fellowship which was created in memory of Engin and her colleagues, to continue her work offering research opportunities to young Turkish physicists.
