description | We present the detector design and performance of the LHCb Muon System. In order to fulfill the requirements of the experiment, the chambers have to provide high detection efficiency, a good time resolution, a high rate capability and good aging characteristics. We present performance results of the chambers from beam tests, with cosmics rays and at the CERN Gamma Irradiation Facility. Cosmic rays have also been used to study the performance of the chambers in the experimental setup. The obtained results allow us to conclude that the requirements of the LHCb experiment are fulfilled and that the LHCb Muon detector is ready for data taking. |
