Sumario: | The aim of this study was to examine the search potential of $WH(H \rightarrow b\bar{b})$ for a light Higgs boson. A cursory overview of the Standard Model of particle physics is given, followed by an introduction to some of the physical quantities that are measured in particle physics experiments. Basic theoretical concepts are discussed, and the Higgs mechanism is described. The associated production process $WH$ is reviewed. This study is the first analysis of this type to be performed in C++ using the Atlfast-Athena detector simulator, and involved replicating the results published earlier in the ATLAS Technical Design Report. The results broadly agree with those in the published report. Based on the subset of the backgrounds to the signal that were successfully generated, a signal significance close to, but not exceeding, 5$\sigma$ is achievable after three years initial operation at low luminosity. |
