description | This note describes the experimental techniques to reconstruct the invariant mass of the top-pair system in top-pair production at CMS in the semileptonic final state with a muon. This study is particularly important to test the presence of new physics in the top sector, and it focusses on the presence of new resonances in the production mechanism of top pairs at the centre of mass energy of 10~TeV. This analysis uses standard reconstruction techniques and has been designed to be optimally sensitive for mass values from production threshold to up to $2\,\rm{TeV}$. The experimental sensitivity to the presence of narrow resonances will be discussed in the scenarios of $100\,\rm{pb}^{-1}$ of collected data. |
