The construction of the CMS Preshower detector : selected innovations and lessons from them

For such a modest-looking subsystem of CMS, the Preshower is of surprising complexity. This Note describes the construction of the detector, and lifts out selected topics for a critical discussion. Among these topics are innovative hardware components, such as the spliced fibre-optic harnesses or the window panels, and construction concepts, such as joining methods or powering.
