description ATLAS plans two major upgrades of the internal tracker for the years to come: the addition of an Insertable B-Layer (IBL) of pixels for year 2015 and the complete replacement of the internal tracker with a new design for sLHC. The IBL, currently in design and advanced prototype phase, will use a new front-chip architecture that is 5 times bigger than the one used by the existing pixel detector and a sensor technology that will stand five times more radiation dose (1x1015 1MeV neutrons/cm2). IBL will improve the physics performance in b-tagging and secondary vertexing, while being a safety insurance for hard failure or reduced efficiency, due to total radiation dose, of the existing b-layer. The future tracker at sLHC will consist of a larger area of pixel, short strip and long-strip detectors. The new tracker has to stand to more than 1x1016 1MeV neutron/cm2 and 500 Mrad in the inner layer. It will have to keep the same, or better, physics performance as the existing tracker with more than 200 events per bunch crossing: material reduction, R/O throughput and possibly level-1 track trigger are the key elements of its design. In the talk an overview of the two projects, focusing on the prototype work going on and on its results, will be presented.
