11 Tesla Nb$_{3}$Sn dipoles for phase II collimation in the Large Hadron Collider
We discuss the option of freeing 3 m segments in the IP3 and IP7 dispersion suppressors of the LHC for new collimators by using shorter and stronger dipoles. These twin aperture dipoles should be about 11 m long and provide a nominal field of 11 T. Therefore, the use of Nb$_{3}$Sn conductors is envi...

Sumario: | We discuss the option of freeing 3 m segments in the IP3 and IP7 dispersion suppressors of the LHC for new collimators by using shorter and stronger dipoles. These twin aperture dipoles should be about 11 m long and provide a nominal field of 11 T. Therefore, the use of Nb$_{3}$Sn conductors is envisaged. In this report we carry out a preliminary design of the cross-section of such magnets, mainly to explore in which way the magnetic constraints can be met. |
