Performance of the ATLAS Tau and Missing Energy triggers with 7 TeV proton proton collisions

The missing energy trigger is a key signature in new physics searches involving new weakly interacting particles. If produced, these particles would escape the ATLAS detector undetected and their presence will be inferred by an imbalance in the total momentum. The best detection of this imbalance is...

description The missing energy trigger is a key signature in new physics searches involving new weakly interacting particles. If produced, these particles would escape the ATLAS detector undetected and their presence will be inferred by an imbalance in the total momentum. The best detection of this imbalance is via the transverse energy measured by the calorimeters. At LHC energies this provides a good approximation to the invisible momentum. Many models for physics beyond the Standard Model predict an increase in the production of tau leptons. Selecting hadronic tau decays at the trigger level will double the sample of tau decays. The combined signatures of both triggers will also be used to study the Standard Model and new physics processes and to carry out the identification and performance studies. This contribution describes the performance of the missing energy and tau triggers using data collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV.
