Sumario: | A future upgrade of the LHC at CERN is foreseen which would extend its physics reach by increasing significantly the luminosity delivered to the experiments. The current ATLAS inner tracker will not cope with the increased collision rates and corresponding increases in occupancies and radiation backgrounds and will have to be replaced. An all-silicon tracking detector is envisaged based on a new generation of radiation hard strip and pixel detectors. Discussed in this paper are: performance results of the current baseline design; the expected radiation backgrounds; results of measurements in which prototype strip detectors were irradiated to sLHC fluences; module assembly and integration concepts; powering and cooling issues. |
