Sumario:In the context of the LHC Injectors upgrade project, the PS has to be brought up to − and to operate reliably at − the level of performance required by the HL-LHC until the end of the LHC lifetime. The study has started on the potential benefits of increasing the injection energy. An overview of the impact of this upgrade will be presented, with a preliminary estimate of the beam characteristics at the SPS entrance and the remaining performance limitations. The necessary hardware modifications will be described, highlighting the critical systems and the risks. The program for the 2011 machine studies and hardware interventions for refining these plans will be presented.
