description The result of a search at the LHC for heavy stable charged particles produced in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV is described. The data sample was collected with the CMS detector and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $1.09$ fb$^{-1}$. Momentum and ionization-energy-loss measurements in the inner tracker detector are used to identify tracks compatible with heavy slow-moving particles. Additionally, tracks passing muon identification criteria are required to have a large time-of-flight consistent with a slow moving particle. In both cases, the final data samples are consistent with the expected background estimated by a data driven technique. This result is interpreted within the context of models with a (quasi-)stable gluino, scalar top-quark models, and scalar tau. Lower limits at 95\% C.L. on the mass of stable gluinos (scalar top-quarks) are set at 899 (620) GeV/$c^2$. The lower mass limit for a scalar tau is set at 293 GeV/$c^2$. A limit of 808 (515) GeV/$c^2$ is also set for a stable gluino (scalar top-quark) that becomes neutral before reaching the muon detectors.
