description | The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) will be a general-purpose detector designed to runat the highest luminosity at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The CMS detectorhas been optimized for the search of the Higgs Boson over a mass range from 90 GeV to1 TeV, but it also allows detection of a wide range of possible signatures from alternativeelectro-weak symmetry breaking mechanism. The importance of using a powerful Detector Control System (DCS) has much increasedwith the size and complexity of High-Energy detectors. The generation of detectors for the LHC experiments puts further requirements onto thefront-end I/O system due to the inaccessibility of the equipment and the hostileenvironment concerning radiation and magnetic field. All of the CMS components shall be controllable. This control system will not only beused during the data taking periods but also during the test, calibration and standbyperiods and during part of the shutdown periods. The work described in this thesis concerns the Link-Board control (in the RPC triggersystem) through a ‘Control Board’ (CB), a small PCB (Printed-Circuit Board) containing, among others, the CCU (Communication and Control Unit) chip, developed at CERN bythe CMS Tracker control group. In the final part of this work I will present the resultsfrom different tests in which the prototypes of the RPC electronic readout system wereused. |
