Study of injection of 50 MeV proton beam from Linac2 and from Linac4 into the PS Booster

The present note indicates the brightness that can be expected for a LHC beam (LHC-25ns) in the PS Booster after a multi-turn injection of 50 MeV protons from Linac4. The motivation for this study has been to know if Linac4 could be a reasonable backup for Linac2 in case of breakdown. The results of...

description The present note indicates the brightness that can be expected for a LHC beam (LHC-25ns) in the PS Booster after a multi-turn injection of 50 MeV protons from Linac4. The motivation for this study has been to know if Linac4 could be a reasonable backup for Linac2 in case of breakdown. The results of this study are derived from simulations of the current PS Booster multi-turn injection with the ORBIT code. First the PS Booster injection model is tested with the reference Linac2 beam injection parameters, and then injection of Linac4 50 MeV protons is simulated and optimized for the highest brightness according to the required LHC emittance. A comparison of the multi-turn injection of Linac2 and Linac4 50 MeV proton beam is presented in the last section.
