description This note presents the first search for magnetic monopoles with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider using an integrated luminosity of 2.00~fb$^{-1}$ of 7~TeV $pp$ collisions. With no events in the signal region, the upper limit of the production cross-section at 95\% confidence level is 2~fb for Dirac magnetic monopoles with the minimum unit magnetic charge and with mass between 200 and 1500~GeV. This result is valid in the fiducial region given by transverse kinetic energy $600-700<E_{\rm T}^{\rm kin}<1400$~GeV, where the lower limit depends on the monopole mass, and pseudorapidity $|\eta|<1.37$. Assuming the kinematic distributions from Drell-Yan production, the upper limit of the cross-section at 95\% confidence level varies from 150~fb to 15~fb for spin-1/2 Dirac magnetic monopoles with mass between 200 and 1200~GeV.
