description | This note reports on simulation results of possible shielding options for the RR regions of the interaction region (IR) 1 and 5 (RR13/17 and RR53/57). The problem caused by high radiation levels even in shielded areas is addressed by the R2E project dedicated to mitigate radiation effects on sensitive LHC electronics. Where possible, relocation or improved shielding provide viable solutions. Four new shielding options were simulated using the FLUKA Monte Carlo code to evaluate fluences of high energy hadrons, neutrons as well as absorbed dose induced by proton-proton collisions and beam-gas interactions. They are compared to each other for one year of nominal LHC operation. |
