Sumario:Using high rate capability in conjunction with high precision, COMPASS can significantly contribute to the physics studied at very low momentum transfers as in Primakoff reactions, that is, the scattering of hadrons off the quasi-real photons forming the Coulomb field of nuclei. Most importantly, it has the unique chance to clarify the question of the pion polarisability, where an unprecedented level of precision is in reach.
