Diffraction results from the ATLAS experiment

First studies dealing with diffraction processes published by the ATLAS collaboration are discussed. Results from two analyses are reviewed, both relying on minimum bias data samples from the beginning of data taking in 2010 where the effect of pile-up background was negligible. One reports on a measurement of the rapidity gap distribution and a detailed comparison with various diffractive and hadronization models, the other on a measured total inelastic cross section.
