Observation of a new state in the search for the Higgs boson at CMS

After an introduction on to the Higgs boson physics and to the CMS detector and event reconstruction, the standard model Higgs boson searches at CMS are described. The results are obtained with the summer 2012 dataset, corresponding to integrated luminosities of up to $5.1\ \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ at $\sq...

description After an introduction on to the Higgs boson physics and to the CMS detector and event reconstruction, the standard model Higgs boson searches at CMS are described. The results are obtained with the summer 2012 dataset, corresponding to integrated luminosities of up to $5.1\ \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s} = 7\ \mathrm{TeV}$ and $5.3\ \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s} = 8\ \mathrm{TeV}$. Particular emphasis is given to the searches in the $\mathrm{H}\to\mathrm{WW}\to2\ell\,2\nu$ and $\mathrm{H}\to\mathrm{ZZ}\to4\ell$ decay modes, and to the combined analysis of all the channels.

After an overview of the theory and of the CMS experiment, all search channels are described, with emphasis on the ones with the best sensitivity. The statistical methodology used to analyse and the outcomes of the searches and the discovery results are then presented in detail.SpringerCERN-THESIS-2012-310CMS-TS-2013-011oai:cds.cern.ch:15479042013
