Production of single Gaussian bunches for Van der Meer scans in the LHC injector chain

In colliders, the Van der Meer scan method consists of sweeping stepwise one beam across the other one, while measuring the collision rate as a function of the beam displacement. The method is applied to determine the absolute luminosity calibration for the experiments. In 2012, a request was made by the LHC experiments to produce transversely Gaussian bunches with relatively large emittances and moderate intensity for such a calibration scan. This brief note describes how these bunches were produced throughout the LHC injection chain.
