Benchmarking BETACOOL with data from LEIR and AD

We have tried to benchmark BETACOOL (simulation software for electron cooling) with data from AD and LEIR. We have found that it is hard to get a good initial value from the data. This made it hard draw accurate conclusions about the quality of the simulations. We explain some of the difficulties that arose and offer a technique for the reconstruction of the transverse phase space distribution of the beam based on the measurements, which contain only the spatial components.
