Study of orbitally excited $B$ mesons and evidence for a new $B\pi$ resonance

Using the full CDF Run II data sample, we report evidence for a new resonance, which we refer to as B(5970), found simultaneously in the $B^0\pi^+$ and $B^+\pi^-$ mass distributions with a significance of 4.4 standard deviations. description Using the full CDF Run II data sample, we report evidence for a new resonance, which we refer to as B(5970), found simultaneously in the $B^0\pi^+$ and $B^+\pi^-$ mass distributions with a significance of 4.4 standard deviations. We further report the first study of resonances consistent with orbitally excited $B^{+}$ mesons and an updated measurement of the properties of orbitally excited $B^0$ and $B_s^0$ mesons. Using samples of approximately 8400 $B^{**0}$, 3300 $B^{**+}$, 1350 $B^{**0}_s$, 2600 $B(5970)^0$, and 1400 $B(5970)^+$ decays, we measure the masses and widths of all states, as well as the product of the relative production rate of $B_1$ and $B_2^*$ states times the branching fraction into a $B^{0,+}$ meson and a charged particle. Furthermore, we measure the branching fraction of the $B_{s2}^{*0} \rightarrow B^{*+} K^-$ decay relative to the $B_{s2}^{*0} \rightarrow B^{+} K^-$ decay, the production rate times the branching fraction of the B(5970) state relative to the $B_{2}^{*0,+}$ state, and the production rate of the orbitally excited $B^{0,+}$ states relative to the $B^{0,+}$ ground state. The masses of the new B(5970) resonances are $5978\pm5(\textrm{stat})\pm12(\textrm{syst}) \textrm{MeV/c}^{2}$ for the neutral state and $5961\pm5(\textrm{stat})\pm12(\textrm{syst}) \textrm{MeV/c}^{2}$ for the charged state, assuming that the resonance decays into $B\pi$ final states. The properties of the orbitally excited and the new $B(5970)^{0,+}$ states are compatible with isospin symmetry.

We further report the first study of resonances consistent with orbitally excited <inline-formula><mml:math display="inline"><mml:msup><mml:mi>B</mml:mi><mml:mo>+</mml:mo></mml:msup></mml:math></inline-formula> mesons and an updated measurement of the properties of orbitally excited <inline-formula><mml:math display="inline"><mml:msup><mml:mi>B</mml:mi><mml:mn>0</mml:mn></mml:msup></mml:math></inline-formula> and <inline-formula><mml:math display="inline"><mml:msubsup><mml:mi>B</mml:mi><mml:mi>s</mml:mi><mml:mn>0</mml:mn></mml:msubsup></mml:math></inline-formula> mesons. We measure the masses and widths of all states, as well as the relative production rates of the <inline-formula><mml:math display="inline"><mml:msub><mml:mi>B</mml:mi><mml:mn>1</mml:mn></mml:msub></mml:math></inline-formula>, <inline-formula><mml:math display="inline"><mml:msubsup><mml:mi>B</mml:mi><mml:mn>2</mml:mn><mml:mo>*</mml:mo></mml:msubsup></mml:math></inline-formula>, and <inline-formula><mml:math display="inline"><mml:mi>B</mml:mi><mml:mo stretchy="false">(</mml:mo><mml:mn>5970</mml:mn><mml:mo stretchy="false">)</mml:mo></mml:math></inline-formula> states and the branching fraction of the <inline-formula><mml:math display="inline"><mml:msubsup><mml:mi>B</mml:mi><mml:mrow><mml:mi>s</mml:mi><mml:mn>2</mml:mn></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mo>*</mml:mo><mml:mn>0</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:msubsup></mml:math></inline-formula> state to either <inline-formula><mml:math display="inline"><mml:msup><mml:mi>B</mml:mi><mml:mrow><mml:mo>*</mml:mo><mml:mo>+</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:msup><mml:msup><mml:mi>K</mml:mi><mml:mo>-</mml:mo></mml:msup></mml:math></inline-formula> and <inline-formula><mml:math display="inline"><mml:msup><mml:mi>B</mml:mi><mml:mo>+</mml:mo></mml:msup><mml:msup><mml:mi>K</mml:mi><mml:mo>-</mml:mo></mml:msup></mml:math></inline-formula>. Furthermore, we measure the production rates of the orbitally excited <inline-formula><mml:math display="inline"><mml:msup><mml:mi>B</mml:mi><mml:mrow><mml:mn>0</mml:mn><mml:mo>,</mml:mo><mml:mo>+</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:msup></mml:math></inline-formula> states relative to the <inline-formula><mml:math display="inline"><mml:msup><mml:mi>B</mml:mi><mml:mrow><mml:mn>0</mml:mn><mml:mo>,</mml:mo><mml:mo>+</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:msup></mml:math></inline-formula> ground state. The masses of the new <inline-formula><mml:math display="inline"><mml:mi>B</mml:mi><mml:mo stretchy="false">(</mml:mo><mml:mn>5970</mml:mn><mml:mo stretchy="false">)</mml:mo></mml:math></inline-formula> resonances are <inline-formula><mml:math display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mn>5978</mml:mn><mml:mo>±</mml:mo><mml:mn>5</mml:mn><mml:mo stretchy="false">(</mml:mo><mml:mtext>stat</mml:mtext><mml:mo stretchy="false">)</mml:mo><mml:mo>±</mml:mo><mml:mn>12</mml:mn><mml:mo stretchy="false">(</mml:mo><mml:mtext>syst</mml:mtext><mml:mo stretchy="false">)</mml:mo><mml:mtext> </mml:mtext><mml:mtext> </mml:mtext><mml:mi>MeV</mml:mi><mml:mo>/</mml:mo><mml:msup><mml:mrow><mml:mi>c</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mn>2</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:msup></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> for the neutral state and <inline-formula><mml:math display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mn>5961</mml:mn><mml:mo>±</mml:mo><mml:mn>5</mml:mn><mml:mo stretchy="false">(</mml:mo><mml:mtext>stat</mml:mtext><mml:mo stretchy="false">)</mml:mo><mml:mo>±</mml:mo><mml:mn>12</mml:mn><mml:mo stretchy="false">(</mml:mo><mml:mtext>syst</mml:mtext><mml:mo stretchy="false">)</mml:mo><mml:mtext> </mml:mtext><mml:mtext> </mml:mtext><mml:mi>MeV</mml:mi><mml:mo>/</mml:mo><mml:msup><mml:mrow><mml:mi>c</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mn>2</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:msup></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> for the charged state, assuming that the resonance decays into <inline-formula><mml:math display="inline"><mml:mi>B</mml:mi><mml:mi>π</mml:mi></mml:math></inline-formula> final states. The properties of the orbitally excited and the new <inline-formula><mml:math display="inline"><mml:mi>B</mml:mi><mml:mo stretchy="false">(</mml:mo><mml:mn>5970</mml:mn><mml:msup><mml:mo stretchy="false">)</mml:mo><mml:mrow><mml:mn>0</mml:mn><mml:mo>,</mml:mo><mml:mo>+</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:msup></mml:math></inline-formula> states are compatible with isospin symmetry.</p>Using the full CDF Run II data sample, we report evidence for a new resonance, which we refer to as $B(5970)$, found simultaneously in the $B^0\pi^+$ and $B^+\pi^-$ mass distributions with a significance of 4.4 standard deviations. We further report the first study of resonances consistent with orbitally excited $B^{+}$ mesons and an updated measurement of the properties of orbitally excited $B^0$ and $B_s^0$ mesons. We measure the masses and widths of all states, as well as the relative production rates of $B_1$, $B_2^*$, and $B(5970)$ states and the branching fraction of the $B_{s2}^{*0}$ state to either $B^{*+} K^-$ and $B^{+} K^-$. Furthermore, we measure the production rates of the orbitally excited $B^{0,+}$ states relative to the $B^{0,+}$ ground state. The masses of the new $B(5970)$ resonances are $5978\pm5(\textrm{stat})\pm12(\textrm{syst}) \textrm{ MeV/c}^{2}$ for the neutral state and $5961\pm5(\textrm{stat})\pm12(\textrm{syst}) \textrm{ MeV/c}^{2}$ for the charged state, assuming that the resonance decays into $B\pi$ final states.
