CERN Open Days 2013, Point 6: Accelerator Systems
Stand description: Each beam of protons that races around the Large Hadron Collider can contain as much energy as a French TGV train travelling at 150 km/hour. When it's time to shut the machine down, the Beam Dump System ensures that this energy is safely dissipated. In the tunnel at Point 6...

description | Stand description: Each beam of protons that races around the Large Hadron Collider can contain as much energy as a French TGV train travelling at 150 km/hour. When it's time to shut the machine down, the Beam Dump System ensures that this energy is safely dissipated. In the tunnel at Point 6 you will be able to see the devices which form part of this system, as well as the blue LHC dipole magnets curving away into the distance. On surface no restricted access On the surface, you can explore a fascinating exhibition of equipment used in CERN's accelerators, with CERN engineers and physicists on hand all day to answer your questions. You will also see one of the cryogenics installations which keep the LHC at just few degrees above absolute zero and you can find out about the measures CERN has put in place to ensure safety and protect the environment. |
