description Operations during the HL-LHC era will impose challenges on the calorimeter electronics both for the main readout and the trigger systems. Aging, radiation tolerance limits and new requirements from the trigger result in the need for substantial upgrades of the calorimeter electronics. We review the evolution of the readout architecture, the strategies and the technical developments in the front-end and back-end electronics as pursued by the calorimeter groups in the four LHC experiments, both emphasizing common aspects as well as pointing out issues specific to a given experiment.
