description All four LHC collaborations plan to replace the tracking systems with more modern systems, with better overall performance, higher granularity and faster data acquisition. LHCb and ALICE have detailed plans for the Phase 1 (LHC LS2) while ATLAS and CMS are planning full tracker replacements at Phase 2 (LHC LS3). The High-Luminosity operation poses unprecedented challenges for the ATLAS and CMS trackers: in addition to enhanced tracking capability and much higher radiation tolerance, the new detectors will also contribute data to form the Level-1 trigger decision. Novel technologies will have to be used in many different areas, requiring a strong and well-focused R&D program, which exploits synergies for common developments and makes best use of existing testing infrastructures.
