description In this note, we present the current status of the preliminary studies related to the secondary beam design in the context of the CERN to Pyhasalmi (CN2PY) scenario of the LAGUNA/LBNO study group. The main design guideline is to maximize the neutrino flux for the first two oscillation probability maxima in a far detector located at 2300 km from the target. For this first iteration of optimization, beam optics very similar to the NuMI project were used and a preliminary set of values for some of the tuning parameters which are the most sensitive in regard to the physics case has been obtained with FLUKA Monte-Carlo simulations. Energy spectra of muon neutrinos at both near and far detectors are shown for the selection configurations. Finally, the limitation of the current beam optics are explained and the next steps of optimization are briefly presented.
