description | This report is an examination of some of the economic and societal impacts of a well-known international high-energy physics infrastructure: the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, CERN, with special emphasis on its latest and most prominent scientific installation, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). While both CERN and the LHC are, to a large extent, unique among research infrastructures, it is hoped that the case studies, analyses and conclusions in this report will make a useful contribution to the wider debate concerning the impacts of investments in large basic research facilities. Specifically, an enumeration and analysis of the pertinent issues and options should be a useful resource for persons who are contemplating the establishment of any major new international collaboration. |
