description | The determination of the jet energy scale and the achievement of the optimal performance in terms of jet energy resolution are of key importance to many LHC physics analyses. This note describes sequential jet corrections, derived from Monte Carlo simulated events and using global properties of the jet, which improves the performance of the existing calibration schemes used in ATLAS. Performance improvements are achieved by using tracking, calorimeter energy deposit, and muon spectrometer information. The performance of the GS corrections using Monte Carlo simulated events, and the validation on data using the 2012 dataset at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV, are presented. The corrections have been derived in the full pseudorapidity ($\eta$) and transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) ranges considered in ATLAS analyses. The relative improvement in resolution increases with the $p_{\rm T}$ and can go up to 35%, depending on the $\eta$ of the jet and the initial calibration applied. The fragmentation differences between jets initiated by a quark and jets initiated by a gluon lead to a flavour dependence in the jet energy scale. The relative improvement in the flavour dependence after applying the global sequential corrections ranges typically between 20% (80%) at low (high) $p_{\rm T}$, depending also on the $\eta$ of the jet and the initial calibration applied. |
