Sumario: | The strength of forward-backward (FB) multiplicity correlations is measured by the ALICE detector in proton-proton (pp) collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 0.9, 2.76 and 7 TeV, for particles with $|\eta|$ < 0.8 and the transverse momentum $p_T$ > 0.3 GeV/c. The multiplicity correlation strength (bcorr) is studied as a function of the pseudorapidity gap ($\eta_{gap}$) between the two windows as well as the width of these windows. A sizable increase of the correlation strength with the collision energy, which cannot be explained exclusively by the increase of the mean multiplicity inside the windows, is observed. The correlation coefficient is also measured for multiplicities in different configurations of two azimuthal sectors selected within the symmetric FB eta-windows. Two different contributions, the short-range (SR) and the long-range (LR), are observed. FB correlations between multiplicities and event-mean transverse momenta in separated rapidity and azimuthal intervals were measured also in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV. A non-trivial dependence of mean-$p_T$ correlations with centrality was revealed, as well as unexpected behaviour of FB correlations in separated azimuthal bins in very central events, which is not reproduced in event generators. Importance of centrality determination issues was demonstrated. It was studied also how correlations depend on other selection criteria such as size of the F and B intervals and range of $p_T$. |
