Particle detectors

After a short introduction of the historical development in detecting elementary particles, present detectors are reviewed. They include: scintillation counters, different types of Cerenkov counters (threshold, differential, and total absorption counters), spark chambers, streamer chambers, proportional chambers, and drift chambers. Applications of multiwire chambers in different fields, notably in crystallography and biology, are briefly indicated. (21 refs).
