description Currently CMS is developing the High Granularity Calorimeter (HGCal) as part of its HL-LHC upgrade and for this various CMS calorimeter prototypes are tested in test beam experiments. In this project test beam data is studied and the project is divided into two parts. In the first part delay wire chamber’s (DWC) efficiency is studied and its claimed pointing resolution is verified. DWCs are used in test beam experiments for position measurement of incoming particles. The data used for this part is taken from CALICE collaboration test which is conducted in May 2018 in CERN’s SPS H2 area. For the second part test beam data of CMS HGCal CE-E prototype is analyzed with the final objective of separating pions from electrons in the particle beam. The goal of this project is to provide first look on how the separation can be done. Furthermore, GEANT4 simulated data of electron and pion are compared with experiment data and analyzed. For this part HGCal test beam data from June 2018 is used, which is also conducted at CERN’s SPS H2 area utilizing electron beams. Lastly, first look of electron-pion separation using machine learning is done and the details can be found in appendix E. Machine learning is not part of the project and is done out of scientific curiosity.
