Light-by-light scattering in lead-lead collisions in the ATLAS experiment
First direct evidence of light-by-light scattering ($\gamma\gamma \rightarrow \gamma\gamma$) was reported in 2017 by the ATLAS experiment, based on 0.48 nb$^{-1}$ of 2015 Pb+Pb collision data at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}=5.02$ TeV. A total of 13 events was found in the signal region with a background...

description | First direct evidence of light-by-light scattering ($\gamma\gamma \rightarrow \gamma\gamma$) was reported in 2017 by the ATLAS experiment, based on 0.48 nb$^{-1}$ of 2015 Pb+Pb collision data at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}=5.02$ TeV. A total of 13 events was found in the signal region with a background expectation of 2.6$\pm$0.7 events. In these slides, the results of the first light-by-light scattering analysis are discussed along with the first look at the 2018 Pb+Pb collision data which correspond to integrated luminosity of 1.7 nb$^{-1}$. |
