description
We know that containers as a technology have had quite the renaissance of hype, excitement and usefulness in the last five years, much of it fueled by significantly large open source projects like Docker and Kubernetes, shepherded by companies who provided significant brainpower to attack containerization in both Linux and Windows, as well as hard problems in distributed computing. But has the "cloud native" renaissance also had an impact on the growing involvement and importance of open source across the industry? In this talk we'll look at how open source and cloud native technologies, like containerization, have had a symbiotic relationship, and how open source has expanded beyond simply code on GitHub to more collaborative approaches around knowledge and technology in science, academia, and across many industries.

About the speaker

Phil is a Distinguished Engineer in the Office of the CTO for the IBM Cloud Platform, guiding IBM’s architecture strategy for containers and Linux. Phil has been significantly involved in open source in the container ecosystem as a core contributor and maintainer on the Docker engine, the CNCF containerd project, as well as his own projects. Phil participates in the Open Container Initiative (OCI) as a member of the Technical Oversight Board (TOB).
