Sumario: | Located in the Linac4 medium energy line, between the Radio Frequency Quadrupole and the Drift Tube Linac (the two first accelerating structures), the 3 MeV beam dump intercepts part of the beam and tailors the beam pulse for cleaner injection into the PS Booster. The dump core is made of copper alloy and consists of a 120 mm long cone with 40 and 12 mm aperture diameters at its entrance and exit respectively. It is, together with the chopper a key component of the Linac4 fast beam chopping scheme, that is meant to considerably reduce the beam losses during the PS Booster injection process. The part of the beam pulse that is not deflected upstream by the chopper electric field, passes through the dump opening, goes to the next accelerating structure and is made available for the PSB injection. The other part of the pulse, deflected vertically by the chopper, is lost on the surface of the cone. |
