High rate tests of the photon detection system for the LHCb RICH Upgrade

The LHCb upgrade will enable the experiment to run with a five-fold increase in the instantaneous luminosity, making it possible to collect 50 fb−1 of data in less than 10 years. The larger instantaneous luminosity of the upgrade leads to a larger occupancy of the detector channels. The student will...

description The LHCb upgrade will enable the experiment to run with a five-fold increase in the instantaneous luminosity, making it possible to collect 50 fb−1 of data in less than 10 years. The larger instantaneous luminosity of the upgrade leads to a larger occupancy of the detector channels. The student will characterise the behavior of the LHCb RICH photon detection system at the expected occupancy and rate of the upgrade, by using the system available in the laboratory at CERN, that implements the readout at 40 MHz. The project includes the study of the MaPMTs response and performance at such high rates and occupancies, and the characterisation of the different powering schemes.
