Sumario:Each of the two beams of protons circulating in the LHC contains as much as energy as a 400 tonne TGV train travelling at 150km per hour. A Machine Protection system continuously monitors the state of the LHC and in case of a fault triggers the Beam Dump system which safely dissipates this energy on a dedicated dump block, all within a period of 90 millionths of a second.
