Sumario: | A search for heavy neutral lepton (N) production in <math altimg="si1.svg"><msup><mrow><mi>K</mi></mrow><mrow><mo linebreak="badbreak" linebreakstyle="after">+</mo></mrow></msup><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><msup><mrow><mi>e</mi></mrow><mrow><mo linebreak="badbreak" linebreakstyle="after">+</mo></mrow></msup><mi>N</mi></math> decays using the data sample collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2017–2018 is reported. Upper limits of the extended neutrino mixing matrix element <math altimg="si2.svg"><mo stretchy="false">|</mo><msub><mrow><mi>U</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>e</mi><mn>4</mn></mrow></msub><msup><mrow><mo stretchy="false">|</mo></mrow><mrow><mn>2</mn></mrow></msup></math> are established at the level of <math altimg="si3.svg"><msup><mrow><mn>10</mn></mrow><mrow><mo linebreak="badbreak" linebreakstyle="after">−</mo><mn>9</mn></mrow></msup></math> over most of the accessible heavy neutral lepton mass range 144–462 MeV/<math altimg="si4.svg"><msup><mrow><mi>c</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>2</mn></mrow></msup></math>, with the assumption that the lifetime exceeds 50 ns. These limits improve significantly upon those of previous production and decay searches. The <math altimg="si2.svg"><mo stretchy="false">|</mo><msub><mrow><mi>U</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>e</mi><mn>4</mn></mrow></msub><msup><mrow><mo stretchy="false">|</mo></mrow><mrow><mn>2</mn></mrow></msup></math> range favoured by Big Bang Nucleosynthesis is excluded up to a mass of about 340 MeV/<math altimg="si4.svg"><msup><mrow><mi>c</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>2</mn></mrow></msup></math>. |
