Sumario:
This unit belongs to the fourth part of the course, which is focussed on magnet design. We first discuss the lay out of the strand, and the technologies for Nb-Ti and Nb3Sn. We then present the concept of the Rutherford cable, with main design parameters as keystone angle and compaction factor, presence of core, copper fraction, diameter. We give a review of the main parameters used in Nb-Ti and Nb3Sn cables. We also briefly outline the cable in conduit used for fusion magnets and the stabilized cables for high energy physics experimental magnets. We finally outline the strategies for cable insulation for Nb-Ti and for Nb3Sn. We conclude with a review of strands and cables parameters used for accelerator magnets.
