Sumario: | The CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) high-energy internal dump (TIDVG) is used to intercept beam dumps coming from the accelerator. After several assembling and acceptance tests, the TIDVG5, SPS' internal beam dump was finally installed at the underground cavern, known as ECX5. It was the location of the erstwhile UA1 detector on the SPS. Once in position, the beam dump is aligned with respect to the beam axis and closed within its multi-layered external shielding. Weighing almost 700 tons, the external shielding is made of 40 cm of reinforced concrete (innermost layer), 1 m of cast-iron (intermediate layer) and 40 cm of reinforced concrete/white marble (outermost layer). |
