description This work focuses on thermal transients in a superconducting combined function magnet. Its goals are two: to evaluate the thermal behavior of the magnet during powering cycles and to propose a quench protection system for it. \\ In particular, for the powering cycles, this thesis wants to assess the impact of transitory losses and cooling features on the thermal transients, demonstrating that with the proposed design the magnet does not result in excessive temperature during the powering, even under very conservative assumptions. This analysis has been performed with a finite-element model in COMSOL\copyright \hspace{0.1mm} Multiphysics, a commercial software to carry out 2D and 3D analysis. \\ Then, for the quench protection analysis, performed in STEAM-LEDET, two solutions have been evaluated: the energy-extraction system, which requires the choice of the energy-extraction resistance, and the magnet self-protection. The main goal for the protection systems proposed is to avoid the magnet resulting in excessive hot-spot temperature (below 300 [K]) and peak voltage to ground (below 1000 [V]).
