description | We describe in this report the status of the study performed at CERN on GaToroid, an idea of a novel magnetic configuration based on the symmetry properties of a toroidal magnetic field, that could find its use in gantries for hadron therapy. In the report we recall briefly the concept of this system, and we then expand on beam optics, toroidal magnet design, vector magnet design options. We describe the main results achieved, proving that a magnetic configuration is feasible, and the principle of beam optics are working. We then enter in some details in the description of the technology and sub-scale model development that is on-going at CERN to demonstrate that a toroidal magnet with the desired performance can be built and successfully powered. Finally, we draw a conclusion on this first stage of development, on what we perceive as outstanding issues, and the plan for the near future. |
