description | A novel method is presented for the measurement of the top-quark mass using only leptonic observables in $t\bar{t}$ events produced in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. Data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$, were collected with the CMS detector during LHC Run II in 2016. The measurement uses the top-quark mass dependence of multiple kinematic distributions comprised from the dilepton e$\mu$ final state of $t\bar{t}$ events. The top-quark mass dependence of each kinematic distribution is calibrated using events generated with a NLO Monte Carlo simulation, and for the first time, with a second simulation that includes the exact NNLO corrections to the top quark decay subprocesses. A profile likelihood scan is utilized to simultaneously compare the shape of predicted and measured kinematic distributions and extract the value of the top-quark mass from the reconstructed leptonic observables. A second method uses the top-quark mass dependence of first and second Mellin moments of the kinematic distributions to obtain an alternative determination of the top-quark mass. |
