description | Electron, photon and tau triggers are essential for signal selection in a wide variety of ATLAS physics analyses including the study of the Standard Model Higgs coupling to fermions or the search for new phenomena like heavy resonances decaying into a pair of leptons. Events are selected by a number of single and di-lepton or photon triggers that may include event topological requirements. The good performance in terms of signal efficiency and rate rejection of the electron, photon and hadronic tau triggers during Run 2 has allowed ATLAS to publish papers of a rich variety of physics analyses within and beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. To cope with the new pile-up conditions in Run 3, the Level-1 calorimeter trigger is upgraded to provide additional depth segmentation within the ATLAS calorimeter system. The electron, photon and tau trigger improvements foreseen in Run 3 will be presented, including both the improved object identification performance foreseen with the new Level-1 calorimeter system as well as details of new or optimized multi-variate techniques used in the various algorithms performed at the high-level trigger. |
