Sumario:The ALICE Collaboration has submitted to the LHCC a Letter of Intent for a major upgrade of its detector referred to as ALICE 3, which is proposed for physics data-taking in Run 5 and beyond. ALICE 3 will enable an extensive programme to fully exploit the LHC for the study of the properties of the quark-gluon plasma. This programme relies on novel and unique compact detector with high readout rate capabilities, superb pointing resolution and excellent tracking and particle identification over a large acceptance. The proposed detector also opens up important new physics opportunities in other areas.
