Sumario: | The goal of these lectures (of 6 times 45 minutes), which have been prepared for the Riga Technical University Course "Accelerator Technologies” (https://indico.cern.ch/event/1149120/), is to provide the necessary background to understand in detail the accelerator physics and perform all the necessary computations. In particular, the following subjects are discussed: classical dynamics and necessary sub-fields, which need to be included for particle accelerators; conditions and trick of particle accelerators; notion of phase space and beam emittance; special relativity; electromagnetism; fixed-target vs. collider modes and figures of merit; short introduction on colliders, ending up with a summary of the different ways to increase their performance and the challenges they are facing. |
