It demonstrated that medical ventilators are financially inaccessible in many hospital settings, and the need for diversified solutions which can deliver ICU level performance persists.</span></span></span></span></p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><span><span><span><span style="color:black">The High Energy physics Ventilator (HEV) is a high-quality, low-cost, versatile ventilator, which was originally designed by a team of CERN scientists and collaborating institutes in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The HEV design provides standard ICU ventilatory modes, is capable of supporting spontaneous breathing and supplying oxygen-enriched air and can be combined with an external air supply for use in situations where compressed air is not readily available. The functionality was developed with a focus on safety and performance. </span></span></span></span></p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><span><span><span><span style="color:black">In 2021, UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), awarded funding to a collaboration between the UK, Brazil and CERN to redesign the HEV, working towards the goal of making high quality medical equipment more widely available in low and middle-income countries. &nbsp;The High Performance Low Cost Ventilator (HPLV) further advances the HEV development towards regulatory approval and commercial implementation.
