description |
The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) team provides assistance with numerical simulation to injectors, the LHC machine and experiments during the design, production and operation of their infrastructure and components. The CFD allows us to develop 2D and 3D models and find numerical solutions to engineering problems such as conjugated heat transfer, smoke extraction, and contaminant dispersions.

This seminar will introduce how the CFD team can support CERN’s development and will focus on the following relevant case studies:

* HL-LHC URx5 Gallery – HVAC system: in the framework of HL-LHC, new power converters and electrical racks will be installed in URx5 underground galleries requiring a new HVAC system to remove the generated heat and keep the temperature within the specified limit. The main goal of this study was to simulate airflow behaviour and temperature at different sections and height along the URx5 gallery to optimise the number and positioning of Air Handling Units and quantify the influence of transient power-up on temperature distributions.

* USA15 2PACL Systems – CO2 leak assessment: the ATLAS collaboration will install the 2PACL pumps for the CO2 detector cooling system in the CV technical room of ATLAS’s technical cavern USA15, together with new electrical racks. The purpose of this study is to assess the impact and distribution of CO2 gas in case of different leak scenarios as well as assess the new temperature distribution in the technical room.

Coffee / tea will be served after the seminar in room 30/7-012 next to the Auditorium
