Sumario: | A search for a new <math display="inline"><msup><mi>Z</mi><mo>′</mo></msup></math> gauge boson associated with (un)broken <math display="inline"><mi>B</mi><mo>-</mo><mi>L</mi></math> symmetry in the keV–GeV mass range is carried out for the first time using the missing-energy technique in the NA64 experiment at the CERN SPS. From the analysis of the data with <math display="inline"><mn>3.22</mn><mo>×</mo><msup><mn>10</mn><mn>11</mn></msup></math> electrons on target collected during 2016–2021 runs, no signal events were found. This allows us to derive new constraints on the <math display="inline"><msup><mi>Z</mi><mo>′</mo></msup><mo>-</mo><mi>e</mi></math> coupling strength, which, for the mass range <math display="inline"><mn>0.3</mn><mo>≲</mo><msub><mi>m</mi><msup><mi>Z</mi><mo>′</mo></msup></msub><mo>≲</mo><mn>100</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>MeV</mi></math>, are more stringent compared to those obtained from the neutrino-electron scattering data. |
